Aargh, fruit flies! Those pesky little gnat-like creatures have invaded our kitchen and we've been engaged in battle ever since. Until, that is, a friend let us in on a simple home remedy learned from their exterminator. Get ready: All it takes is cider vinegar, a jar, dish soap, and plastic wrap:

What Are Fruit Flies?

Fruit flies are tiny, little pesky bugs that love to hang out on your fruits and vegetables, and easily find their way into your house through cracks and holes in window screens. They reproduce very quickly (one can grow from egg to adult in just over a week), so they multiply easily and set up camp in your kitchen and feed off any fermenting fruit you've left around.

To prevent an infestation, try to keep your sink and counters clean of fruit bits and food scraps, and take out the trash regularly. This includes empty wine and beer bottles in your recycling bin.

For an all-natural fruit fly remedy, try one of these homemade traps:

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies

Pour just enough cider vinegar to cover the bottom of the jar. Add a drop of dish soap (it will break the surface tension of the vinegar so the fruit flies can't just sit atop the liquid). Now, cover the jar with plastic wrap and poke a few holes in the top. The little guys won't be able to stay away, and you'll have your kitchen back to yourself!
